How much life insurance do you need?

A simple calculator and the reasoning: how many years of income, what debts are outstanding, education costs, and what you've already saved.

A straightforward method is to identify what your paycheck replaced each year, multiply by how many working years remain, add outstanding debts, and account for education costs.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Rough formula: (annual pay × years to cover) + debts + education funds − existing savings and group coverage = target amount.

Why those inputs

Years of income. Ten to twenty years of earnings is what most households in your age range end up needing. Younger families with kids often lean toward twenty.

Debts. Your mortgage is typically the biggest one. Add student loans, car loans, and other obligations. Coverage should replace or pay off what remains.

Education. A ball-park figure per child in today's dollars. Public university is lower; private is higher.

What you already have. Savings on hand and employer-provided group coverage (if you have it) both count as existing protection.
